Background: About 45 percent of oncologists report burnout BO despite high careerspecialty satisfaction CSSS . Little is knon about BO and CSSS among Physician Assistants PAs in oncology onc . With increased utilization of PAs in onc it is important to understand the onc PA orkforce x0026; its ability to meet the expected demand. Methods: Over 4 months in 2015 e conducted a national survey of PAs in onc. The sample size 855 as from the Association. of PAs in Onc APAO . BO as assessed using the Maslach Burnout Inventory x0026; the emotional exhaustion EE x0026; depersonalization DP subscales. 5-point Likert scales assessed PAs opinions about compensation, orkload, CSSS and their relationship ith their collaborating physician CP . A composite score as created for the 3 items on CP relationship. Results: The response rate as 29.2 percent n = 250 . Respondents ere representative of PAs in onc; female 88.8 percent , age 35-44 37.6 percent , academic practice 55.2 percent , urban location 61.2 percent , outpatient 74.4 percent , medical oncology 75.2 percent , orked 41-50 hourseek 52.8 percent , 10-20 years as PA in onc 35.2 percent . Overall, burnout as reported in 34.8 percent. High scores on EE 17.2 percent , DP 4.4 percent or both 13.2 percent contributed to overall rate of BO. Increase in hours orked per eek p = 0.0017 x0026; disagreement ith fairness of compensation lt 0.0001 ere associated ith higher rates of BO. Med Onc, Surg Onc, Rad Onc x0026; ;Other ; onc specialties had BO rates of 38.8 percent,30 percent,15.40 percent, 15.8 percent p = 0.077 . BO rates did not differ by age, gender, practice settinglocation, compensation method, or years as an onc PA. An increase in BO as seen for PAs ho did not feel valued by their CP, encouraged to achieve professional goals or hose contributions to the practice ere unacknoledged by their CP P lt 0.001 for all items . BO increased from 20 percent to 62 percent p lt 0.001 using the CP overall composite score. Overall CS x0026; SS ere high 86 percent x0026; 90 percent . In the next 2 years, only 3.6 percent PAs plan to pursue a different career or specialty x0026; 2 percent plan to retire. Conclusions: Despite high CS x0026; SS, burnout is common in PAs in onc. Negligible short-term attrition of the current onc PA orkforce is anticipated.
