T1 0-126 Title denotes Attenuated Bordetella pertussis vaccine protects against respiratory syncytial virus disease via an IL-17-dependent mechanism.
T7 11-31 Microorganism denotes Bordetella pertussis
T8 32-39 Habitat denotes vaccine
T9 57-68 Habitat denotes respiratory
T10 57-84 Microorganism denotes respiratory syncytial virus
T2 127-420 Paragraph denotes We attenuated virulent Bordetella pertussis by genetically eliminating or detoxifying three major toxins. This strain, named BPZE1, is being developed as a possible live nasal vaccine for the prevention of whooping cough. It is immunogenic and safe when given intranasally in adult volunteers.
T11 141-149 Phenotype denotes virulent
T12 150-170 Microorganism denotes Bordetella pertussis
T13 252-257 Microorganism denotes BPZE1
T14 292-310 Habitat denotes live nasal vaccine
T15 297-302 Habitat denotes nasal
T16 403-419 Habitat denotes adult volunteers
T3 421-596 Paragraph denotes Before testing in human infants, we wished to examine the potential effect of BPZE1 on a common pediatric infection (respiratory syncytial virus [RSV]) in a preclinical model.
T17 439-452 Habitat denotes human infants
T18 499-504 Microorganism denotes BPZE1

T23 597-602 Microorganism denotes BPZE1
T4 597-780 Paragraph denotes BPZE1 was administered before or after RSV administration in adult or neonatal mice. Pathogen replication, inflammation, immune cell recruitment, and cytokine responses were measured.
T24 636-639 Microorganism denotes RSV
T25-0 658-663 _FRAGMENT denotes adult
T26 667-680 Habitat denotes neonatal mice
T25-1 676-680 Habitat denotes mice
T27 682-690 Phenotype denotes Pathogen
T28 718-729 Habitat denotes immune cell
T29 781-786 Microorganism denotes BPZE1
T5 781-1452 Paragraph denotes BPZE1 alone did not cause overt disease, but induced efflux of neutrophils into the airway lumen and production of IL-10 and IL-17 by mucosal CD4(+) T cells. Given intranasally before RSV infection, BPZE1 markedly attenuated RSV, preventing weight loss, reducing viral load, and attenuating lung cell recruitment. Given neonatally, BPZE1 also protected against RSV-induced weight loss even through to adulthood. Furthermore, it markedly increased IL-17 production by CD4(+) T cells and natural killer cells and recruited regulatory cells and neutrophils after virus challenge. Administration of anti-IL-17 antibodies ablated the protective effect of BPZE1 on RSV disease.
T30 844-855 Habitat denotes neutrophils

T6 1453-1752 Paragraph denotes Rather than enhancing RSV disease, BPZE1 protected against viral infection, modified viral responses, and enhanced natural mucosal resistance. Prevention of RSV infection by BPZE1 seems in part to be caused by induction of IL-17. Clinical trial registered with www.clinicaltrials.gov (NCT 01188512).
