Pathogenesis of liver damage during parenteral nutrition: is lipofuscin a clue? Lipofuscin develops in cells when peroxidation damage occurs. Its development in the liver of patients receiving prolonged parenteral nutrition suggests that peroxidation damage by free radicals has occurred. Deficiencies in antioxidants such as vitamin E may be an important contributing factor.
