Direct costs include all treatment costs that arise directly from medical care. These include items such as the cost of psychiatric inpatient and outpatient care, psychological, rehabilitation, medication, or emergency room treatments. Indirect costs cover all costs that occur secondary to the disease. These include items such as production losses and sickness benefit payments due to days absent at work, as well as years lost due to mortality.
