Consequently, evolutionary ecologists have employed a number of non-destructive methods to serve as indices of body condition (Sears 1988; Redfern et al. 2000; Sutton et al. 2000; Stevenson and Woods 2006; Peig and Green 2009), with the residual index being the most common method used. Residual index (R i) is calculated for each individual as the residual from an ordinary least squares (OLS) regression of body mass on a measurement of length (e.g., Jakob et al. 1996; Schulte-Hostedde et al. 2001, 2005; Ardia 2005).
