Recognition of pathogens is mediated by phagocytic cells through germline-encoded receptors, known as “pattern recognition receptors,” which detect pathogen-associated molecular patterns that are characteristic products of microbial physiology (Kimbrell and Beutler 2001; Janeway and Medzhitov 2002).
