Molecular genetic studies in Arabidopsis have established that JA also performs a critical role in anther and pollen development but is not essential for other developmental aspects of the plant's life cycle. Here, we describe the phenotypic and molecular characterization of a sterile mutant of tomato (jasmonic acid-insensitive1 [jai1]) that is defective in JA signaling. Although the mutant exhibited reduced pollen viability, sterility was caused by a defect in the maternal control of seed maturation, which was associated with the loss of accumulation of JA-regulated proteinase inhibitor proteins in reproductive tissues. jai1 plants exhibited several defense-related phenotypes, including the inability to express JA-responsive genes, severely compromised resistance to two-spotted spider mites, and abnormal development of glandular trichomes. We demonstrate that these defects are caused by the loss of function of the tomato homolog of CORONATINE-INSENSITIVE1 (COI1), an F-box protein that is required for JA-signaled processes in Arabidopsis. These findings indicate that the JA/COI1 signaling pathway regulates distinct developmental processes in different plants and suggest a role for JA in the promotion of glandular trichome-based defenses.","tracks":[{"project":"Trait curation","denotations":[{"id":"T1","span":{"begin":192,"end":194},"obj":"144994"},{"id":"T2","span":{"begin":407,"end":409},"obj":"144994"},{"id":"T3","span":{"begin":704,"end":706},"obj":"144994"},{"id":"T4","span":{"begin":905,"end":907},"obj":"144994"},{"id":"T5","span":{"begin":1066,"end":1068},"obj":"144994"},{"id":"T6","span":{"begin":1316,"end":1320},"obj":"112852"},{"id":"T7","span":{"begin":1316,"end":1320},"obj":"111559"},{"id":"T8","span":{"begin":1361,"end":1363},"obj":"144994"},{"id":"T9","span":{"begin":1432,"end":1434},"obj":"144994"},{"id":"T10","span":{"begin":1435,"end":1439},"obj":"111559"},{"id":"T11","span":{"begin":1435,"end":1439},"obj":"112852"},{"id":"T12","span":{"begin":1544,"end":1546},"obj":"144994"}],"attributes":[{"subj":"T1","pred":"source","obj":"Trait curation"},{"subj":"T2","pred":"source","obj":"Trait curation"},{"subj":"T3","pred":"source","obj":"Trait curation"},{"subj":"T4","pred":"source","obj":"Trait curation"},{"subj":"T5","pred":"source","obj":"Trait curation"},{"subj":"T6","pred":"source","obj":"Trait curation"},{"subj":"T7","pred":"source","obj":"Trait curation"},{"subj":"T8","pred":"source","obj":"Trait curation"},{"subj":"T9","pred":"source","obj":"Trait curation"},{"subj":"T10","pred":"source","obj":"Trait curation"},{"subj":"T11","pred":"source","obj":"Trait curation"},{"subj":"T12","pred":"source","obj":"Trait curation"}]}],"config":{"attribute types":[{"pred":"source","value type":"selection","values":[{"id":"Trait curation","color":"#93ecdc","default":true}]}]}}
