Believing conspiracy theories is a way to create a sense of control. Beliefs in conspiracy theories are widely considered to be a product of a perceived lack of control [55]. Miller et al. [3] argue that those with strong beliefs in conspiracy theories are able to see how endorsing the conspiracy can serve their own stakes. Douglas et al. [10] explain that people who lack control may seek a sense of control by believing conspiracy theories because such theories provide an opportunity to refuse official narratives and allow people to feel that they have a better understanding. High levels of powerlessness, along with low levels of self-esteem, are related to beliefs in specific conspiracies, whereas high external locus of control levels, along with low trust levels, are associated with endorsements of conspiracies [24]. A sense of lacking control may cause people to adopt conspiracy-like thinking. Sullivan et al. [56] use an experiment to demonstrate that participants with no control over given topics increase their endorsement of specific conspiracy theories. The result shows that the feeling of control over COVID-19 is very low, leading to conspiracy theories. Earnshaw et al. [2] argue that the COVID-19 pandemic provides a powerful context for people to utilize conspiracy theories in an attempt to restore feelings of safety and control.","tracks":[{"project":"LitCovid-PubTator","denotations":[{"id":"149","span":{"begin":495,"end":501},"obj":"Species"},{"id":"150","span":{"begin":665,"end":671},"obj":"Species"}],"attributes":[{"id":"A149","pred":"tao:has_database_id","subj":"149","obj":"Tax:9606"},{"id":"A150","pred":"tao:has_database_id","subj":"150","obj":"Tax:9606"},{"subj":"149","pred":"source","obj":"LitCovid-PubTator"},{"subj":"150","pred":"source","obj":"LitCovid-PubTator"}],"namespaces":[{"prefix":"Tax","uri":"https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/taxonomy/"},{"prefix":"MESH","uri":"https://id.nlm.nih.gov/mesh/"},{"prefix":"Gene","uri":"https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/gene/"},{"prefix":"CVCL","uri":"https://web.expasy.org/cellosaurus/CVCL_"}]},{"project":"LitCovid-sentences","denotations":[{"id":"T243","span":{"begin":0,"end":135},"obj":"Sentence"},{"id":"T244","span":{"begin":136,"end":204},"obj":"Sentence"},{"id":"T245","span":{"begin":205,"end":310},"obj":"Sentence"},{"id":"T246","span":{"begin":311,"end":461},"obj":"Sentence"},{"id":"T247","span":{"begin":462,"end":718},"obj":"Sentence"},{"id":"T248","span":{"begin":719,"end":966},"obj":"Sentence"},{"id":"T249","span":{"begin":967,"end":1045},"obj":"Sentence"},{"id":"T250","span":{"begin":1046,"end":1211},"obj":"Sentence"},{"id":"T251","span":{"begin":1212,"end":1315},"obj":"Sentence"},{"id":"T252","span":{"begin":1316,"end":1495},"obj":"Sentence"}],"namespaces":[{"prefix":"_base","uri":"http://pubannotation.org/ontology/tao.owl#"}],"attributes":[{"subj":"T243","pred":"source","obj":"LitCovid-sentences"},{"subj":"T244","pred":"source","obj":"LitCovid-sentences"},{"subj":"T245","pred":"source","obj":"LitCovid-sentences"},{"subj":"T246","pred":"source","obj":"LitCovid-sentences"},{"subj":"T247","pred":"source","obj":"LitCovid-sentences"},{"subj":"T248","pred":"source","obj":"LitCovid-sentences"},{"subj":"T249","pred":"source","obj":"LitCovid-sentences"},{"subj":"T250","pred":"source","obj":"LitCovid-sentences"},{"subj":"T251","pred":"source","obj":"LitCovid-sentences"},{"subj":"T252","pred":"source","obj":"LitCovid-sentences"}]}],"config":{"attribute types":[{"pred":"source","value type":"selection","values":[{"id":"LitCovid-PubTator","color":"#939bec","default":true},{"id":"LitCovid-sentences","color":"#b5ec93"}]}]}}
