Influenza strains, such as the lethal H5N1, down-regulate PD1 (Tam et al. 2013). There is an inverse correlation between the level of PD1 and the level of pathogenicity of various virus isolates. In addition to the host’s inflammatory response, PD1 has a direct antiviral action against influenza. Both PD1 and its isomer PDX (LOX-mediated double oxygenation) limit viral replication by interfering with the viral RNA nuclear transport mechanism (Fig. 3) (Imai 2015; Morita et al. 2013; Baillie and Digard 2013).
