We hypothesized that individuals in social isolation due to lockdown measures would consume more substances. Mapping the changes in substance use and the reasons for these changes during large-scale general social isolation is important. It reveals the response of the general population in times of stress and may, therefore, be of valuable help to provide appropriate care in post-COVID times and indicate possible preventive actions in case of similar events. In this study, we report on changes in alcohol, tobacco, and cannabis use in the midst of the COVID-19 lockdown in Belgium and report on the major motives for the change in consumption."}
