In this scenario, too high a virulence kills the host and parasite and too low a virulence leads to failure to transmit. Applying this hypothesis specifically to free-living survival would suggest that selection for increased free-living survival should come at the expense of virulence (producing a pathogen that is less harmful to the host). Mechanistically, as a consequence of increased adaptation to a nonhost environment, a virus may be less fit to replicate inside a host [9,15]. For example, a more robust viral capsid may help to survive harsh environmental conditions but may make it more difficult to package RNA/DNA [15]. More generally, the tradeoff hypothesis can be framed in the context of a life-history tradeoff: investment in certain parts of the life cycle often comes at the expense of others [2,16].","tracks":[{"project":"2_test","denotations":[{"id":"32971954-6755367-143921936","span":{"begin":111,"end":112},"obj":"6755367"},{"id":"32971954-8919665-143921937","span":{"begin":115,"end":117},"obj":"8919665"},{"id":"32971954-23594543-143921938","span":{"begin":636,"end":637},"obj":"23594543"},{"id":"32971954-16756387-143921939","span":{"begin":638,"end":640},"obj":"16756387"},{"id":"32971954-16756387-143921940","span":{"begin":785,"end":787},"obj":"16756387"},{"id":"32971954-25087040-143921941","span":{"begin":971,"end":972},"obj":"25087040"}],"attributes":[{"subj":"32971954-6755367-143921936","pred":"source","obj":"2_test"},{"subj":"32971954-8919665-143921937","pred":"source","obj":"2_test"},{"subj":"32971954-23594543-143921938","pred":"source","obj":"2_test"},{"subj":"32971954-16756387-143921939","pred":"source","obj":"2_test"},{"subj":"32971954-16756387-143921940","pred":"source","obj":"2_test"},{"subj":"32971954-25087040-143921941","pred":"source","obj":"2_test"}]},{"project":"LitCovid-PubTator","denotations":[{"id":"17","span":{"begin":91,"end":109},"obj":"Disease"}],"attributes":[{"id":"A17","pred":"tao:has_database_id","subj":"17","obj":"MESH:D010272"},{"subj":"17","pred":"source","obj":"LitCovid-PubTator"}],"namespaces":[{"prefix":"Tax","uri":"https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/taxonomy/"},{"prefix":"MESH","uri":"https://id.nlm.nih.gov/mesh/"},{"prefix":"Gene","uri":"https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/gene/"},{"prefix":"CVCL","uri":"https://web.expasy.org/cellosaurus/CVCL_"}]},{"project":"LitCovid-sentences","denotations":[{"id":"T23","span":{"begin":0,"end":155},"obj":"Sentence"},{"id":"T24","span":{"begin":156,"end":276},"obj":"Sentence"},{"id":"T25","span":{"begin":277,"end":499},"obj":"Sentence"},{"id":"T26","span":{"begin":500,"end":642},"obj":"Sentence"},{"id":"T27","span":{"begin":643,"end":789},"obj":"Sentence"},{"id":"T28","span":{"begin":790,"end":977},"obj":"Sentence"}],"namespaces":[{"prefix":"_base","uri":"http://pubannotation.org/ontology/tao.owl#"}],"attributes":[{"subj":"T23","pred":"source","obj":"LitCovid-sentences"},{"subj":"T24","pred":"source","obj":"LitCovid-sentences"},{"subj":"T25","pred":"source","obj":"LitCovid-sentences"},{"subj":"T26","pred":"source","obj":"LitCovid-sentences"},{"subj":"T27","pred":"source","obj":"LitCovid-sentences"},{"subj":"T28","pred":"source","obj":"LitCovid-sentences"}]}],"config":{"attribute types":[{"pred":"source","value type":"selection","values":[{"id":"2_test","color":"#93a0ec","default":true},{"id":"LitCovid-PubTator","color":"#baec93"},{"id":"LitCovid-sentences","color":"#ec93d4"}]}]}}
