About 257 million people are persistently infected, facing a high risk to develop liver cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma [1]. Current treatments can control HBV replication without eliminating HBV infection. To develop new, curative therapies for chronic HBV carriers, an improved understanding of the viral life cycle is essential. Like all viruses, HBV needs to exploit the molecular machinery of a cell to multiply [2,3].
