Heart transplant numbers have consistently dropped since reaching a maximum at the end of the 1990s, with a historically low number carried out in 2017. Therefore, it is almost exclusively those candidates with a high-urgency status who are offered an organ. The mortality rate of patients on the highly urgent list who are waiting for a suitable organ is high and is exacerbated by a dynamic rise caused by more and more high-urgency candidates and longer waiting times (Fig. 5B) [50]."}
