This is understandable as BPD is present in 1–2% of the population, 10% of psychiatric outpatients and between 15% and 25% of inpatients [8–10]. Additionally patients with BPD present to services at a high risk of self-harm, with up to 10% of psychiatric outpatients committing suicide, a rate almost 50 times higher than the general population [11].
