Importance of obtaining a timely sample makes clinical utilization difficult. Ideally, a serum tryptase level should be obtained within 3 hours of symptom onset, as levels return to baseline within 24 hours of symptom resolution.36 In cases of food-induced anaphylaxis, however, often serum tryptase is not elevated, even when sent within an appropriate time frame.
