SHR-cp/cp rats, compared with non-Tg. SHR-cp/cp rats. Human apoB Tg. SHR-cp/cp rats showed marked glomerulosclerosis. Glomerulosclerosis is a hallmark of diabetic nephropathy. They also showed lipid accumulation in the glomeruli. Several studies have shown the presence of lipid accumulation in the kidneys of diabetic patients [6] and animal models [8, 12, 20, 26]. It has been suggested that lipid accumulation in the kidney could play a role in the pathogenesis of diabetic nephropathy [6, 8, 12, 20, 26]. It has been thought that lipid accumulation in glomeruli and subsequent lipotoxicity would cause podocyte dysfunction and apoptosis [6], activate inflammatory mediators [9], and finally cause kidney injury, although the detailed pathogenic process in human apoB Tg.
