This is most likely due to a general upregulation of protective compounds during the cellular stress response, because water in the experimental chambers was well-aerated and the fish were not exposed to hypoxic conditions. The upregulated genes CAT and SESN2 encode proteins that protect cells from oxidative damage due to hydrogen peroxide and other oxidative compounds (Takeuchi et al. 1995; Budanov et al. 2004, 2011).
