As such, a meticulous post-surgical monitoring regimen is the best approach to timely detection of recurrence. However, to date, follow-up protocols have only been reported in a handful of studies and differ from center to center [13, 15, 28]. In general, the most frequent follow-ups are done within the first year following pituitary surgery, after which monitoring frequency typically tapers off to once a year. Benefits to this follow-up protocol are that any cases of delayed remission can be identified and cases of hypocortisolism or hypopituitarism that may result from damage to the pituitary during surgery can be discovered early and treated. However, incidence of recurrence peaks within 1–5 years post-surgery with sizeable incidence also reported between 5 and 10 years of follow-up [27].
