One of the prominent features of the experiments reported in Figure 1, as well as other experiments in awake behaving animals, is that all recorded cells exhibit a pronounced background (or baseline, or spontaneous) activity, typically of a few Hertz. The question of how a network with heavy recurrent connectivity can sustain activity at low rates was addressed by several groups in the nineties (Amit and Brunel, 1997; Tsodyks and Sejnowski, 1995; van Vreeswijk, 1996; van Vreeswijk and Sompolinsky, 1998).
