Modulation of either GT1b or GD3 content affected phosphoinositol 3-kinase activation, and inhibition of this activation reversed the stimulation of cell spreading by anti-GD3 antibody, anti-GT1b antibody, and ganglioside depletion, suggesting that phosphoinositol 3-kinase is an intermediate in both the FAK/Src and protein kinase C pathways that lead to cell spreading.
