•  We downscaled the coarse spatial resolution of deaths to mitigate ecological bias.
•  We accounted for confounding, spatial autocorrelation and pre-existing conditions.
•  We found some evidence of an effect of NO2 on COVID-19 mortality.
•  The effect of long-term PM2.5 exposure remains more uncertain.
•  Our spatial model captured strong patterns likely reflecting disease spread.
