The unexpected emergence of deadly coronaviruses, severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus (SARS-CoV) and middle east respiratory syndrome coronavirus (MERS- CoV) significantly affected human health, leading to increased mortality and life disruption. Recently, a third highly pathogenic and infectious coronavirus, severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), emerged as a deadly pandemic calling for intense research efforts on its pathogenicity mechanism and development of therapeutic strategies. Among others, pro-resolving mediators have been investigated as a therapeutic opportunity for treatment and management of SARS-CoV-2; cytokine storm has been associated with severe illness and mortality, with many studies reporting higher concentrations of pro-inflammatory cytokines in severely ill SARS-CoV-2 patients as compared to those with less severe infection. Hence, resolution of inflammation through selective counter-regulation of cytokines has been identified as a potential therapeutic target for SARS-CoV-2. In this review, we discussed the characteristics of specialized pro-resolving lipid mediators (SPMs) that induce the resolution of inflammation and reviewed evidence from recent studies on SPMs as therapeutic options for viral infections, including SARS-CoV-2. We hope that this review will be of great help in guiding researchers who are exploring SPMs as therapeutic targets for viral infections.
