Most of all, it showed immunosuppressive properties, allowing its employment (alone or in combination) in the first-line treatment of several auto-immune diseases, like rheumatoid arthritis, lupus erythematosus, primary Sjögren’s syndrome, and anti-phospholipid syndrome. Moreover, HCQ was revealed to be effective in preclinical and clinical trials to dampening autoimmune disease-dependent cardiovascular complications (Figure 7), as well as in the amelioration of disease-independent hyperglycemia, hyperlipidemia, and gastrointestinal complaints.
