According to data derived from a number of hospitalization rates in children, pediatric COVID-19 cases have relatively milder symptoms and less severe illness in general when compared with those of older patients (107). The reason for this difference between children and adults remains elusive, although there are reports that suggest that children may have lower viral loads (108). Most children who required intensive care support had preexisting conditions (36), and in the United States, infants accounted for the highest percentage of hospitalizations (15%–62%). Whereas 18.5% of adults with COVID-19 had severe disease, only 6% of children with COVID-19 exhibited severe symptoms (109).
