Initial examination of the neonate was normal and the Apgar score was 9/10 at 1 and 5 mins. Vital signs were within normal limits and a complete blood count revealed a normal WBC of 9000 cells/mm3 (Table 2). Due to the above circumstances, the patient was admitted to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) for hypoglycemia monitoring and continuous cardiac, respiratory, and pulse oximetry monitoring. The patient was also started on prophylactic oral zidovudine.
