Demographic characteristics for the control patients were as follows: age 32 (28–33) years and 9/10 male sex for laboratory investigation control patients; 39 (36–44) years and 5/10 male sex for sidestream darkfield imaging measurement control patients. All individuals of the control cohorts had no relevant medical preconditions.
