SAGES will monitor emerging evidence considering the limited evidence about the relative risk of COVID-19 spreading in the OR by minimally invasive surgery in comparison to conventional open surgery.12 The ACS mentioned that aerosol-generating procedures increase the risk for OR personnel and may not be avoidable, but confirmed the insufficiency of evidence to recommend or discommend minimally invasive surgery.13 Meanwhile, SAGES underlined the proven benefits of minimally invasive surgery to reduce postoperative morbidity and hospital stay and, therefore, should be strongly considered in these patients.
