4 Contact transmission11 Transmission of infection by skin-to-skin contact with an infected person, or by touching contaminated items from a person's room (fomites: patient care equipment, telephones, TV remote controls, countertops, as well as bedding, etc.). Wound drainage, as well as secretions or bodily fluids (vomitus, diarrhea, etc.) increase risks for contact transmission. Some notable pathogens transmitted by contact include norovirus, MRSA, C. difficile, VRE (vancomycin resistant enterococcus), CRE (carbepenum-resistant enterococcus), SARS, and MERS, among others.
