Importantly, OSA patients also exhibit increased genioglossus (GG) muscle activity during wakefulness, suggesting the presence of a neuromuscular compensatory mechanism that prevents upper airway collapse in those individuals with narrowed airways [8]. Although the mechanisms producing this compensatory increase in pharyngeal muscle activity in OSA patients are unknown, it is significant that this compensatory reflex is present in wakefulness and its withdrawal in sleep precipitates OSA.","divisions":[{"label":"Title","span":{"begin":0,"end":8}}],"tracks":[{"project":"2_test","denotations":[{"id":"11686898-1569196-133861110","span":{"begin":542,"end":543},"obj":"1569196"}],"attributes":[{"subj":"11686898-1569196-133861110","pred":"source","obj":"2_test"}]},{"project":"NEUROSES","denotations":[{"id":"T42","span":{"begin":260,"end":264},"obj":"CHEBI_50906"},{"id":"T43","span":{"begin":332,"end":341},"obj":"PATO_0000470"},{"id":"T44","span":{"begin":411,"end":419},"obj":"PATO_0000070"},{"id":"T45","span":{"begin":707,"end":713},"obj":"PATO_0000231"},{"id":"T46","span":{"begin":717,"end":724},"obj":"PATO_0000467"}],"attributes":[{"subj":"T42","pred":"source","obj":"NEUROSES"},{"subj":"T43","pred":"source","obj":"NEUROSES"},{"subj":"T44","pred":"source","obj":"NEUROSES"},{"subj":"T45","pred":"source","obj":"NEUROSES"},{"subj":"T46","pred":"source","obj":"NEUROSES"}]}],"config":{"attribute types":[{"pred":"source","value type":"selection","values":[{"id":"2_test","color":"#ec9993","default":true},{"id":"NEUROSES","color":"#93a6ec"}]}]}}
