In series 3, fifty grams of pillared clay with high basal spacing and surface area (17.6 Å and 233 m2/g, respectively) were obtained by applying the best pillaring method studied in series 2 (pillaring agent synthesized at 60 °C with subsequent aging over 24 h at ambient temperature) and amount of water in clay suspension (1 g of clay/100 mL of water). The textural properties and basal spacing obtained by this material are comparable to the results obtained with the traditional pillaring method employing just 3 g of clay.
