6. Neurogenic Hypothesis of Depression As noted earlier, neurogenesis in the adult hippocampus is seen across a variety of species, including humans [7]. Adult hippocampal neurogenesis has been hypothesized to play a potentially important role on the pathology and successful treatment of depression. A neurogenic hypothesis of depression has been postulated, which suggests that reduced adult hippocampal neurogenesis may underlie the pathoetiology of depression, while antidepressant efficacy depends on the upregulation of hippocampal neurogenesis [58].
