To directly evaluate SMARTFINDER's constraint graph approach with our positional join approach, in Figure 12(c), we compare the time for the second step of SMOTIF-2 and SMARTFINDER, after the suffix tree is built in the first step. We observe that SMOTIF-2 is orders of magnitude faster than SMARTFINDER in finding all the occurrences that satisfy the structured gap constraints depending on the number of missing components allowed. We conclude that doing positional joins on the inverted index is an efficient way of enumerating all occurrences.
