The adipocytes can increase in size and number in obesity and in certain cardiomyopathies (see Chapter 10) or skeletal myopathies (see Chapter 15 and Fig. 15-9) . Adipocytes also accumulate in atrophied tissues, such as skeletal Cholesterol crystals typically elicit granulomatous inflammation ( Fig. 1-37 ) and are common in the cholesterol granulomas ("cholesteatomas") in the choroid plexus of old horses; these can become large enough to obstruct the flow of cerebrospinal fluid but more often are an incidental finding.
