In systemic amyloidosis associated with chronic inflammation, and therefore classified as secondary, serum amyloid A (AA) protein (produced mainly by hepatocytes) is cleaved into fragments that are deposited as amyloid fibrils in various tissues, particularly the kidney (especially renal glomeruli; E- Fig. 1-16 ; see , liver (especially the space of Disse; see Chapter 8 and Fig. 8-44) , and splenic white pulp (see Fig. 13-61) . Hereditary or familial forms of AA amyloidosis are also recognized.
