Study population characteristics According to Australian national averages (Australian Bureau of Statistics, 2019; Shannon, 2002), 9.1% of adult Australians consumed at least one sugar-sweetened beverage each day and 51% consumed at least two servings of fruit. Furthermore, 67% of the Australian adult population are classified as being overweight or obese, and 4.1% have type 2 diabetes. In contrast to these national patterns, 53% of the study cohort consumed at least one sugar-sweetened beverage each day. While 70% consumed at least two servings of fruit each day, 76% of the study population were overweight or obese and 39% had type 2 diabetes.
